Grove City wraps up 2007 season

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College softball team concluded the 2007 season by dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at La Roche Thursday afternoon. La Roche earned an 8-1 win in the opener, then pulled out a 3-0 victory over Grove City (9-25) in the nightcap.

In the opener, Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City). However, La Roche answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the second inning.

Hughes went 2 for 3 as La Roche limited Grove City to five hits. Sophomore Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) took the pitching defeat after allowing eight runs and 11 hits in six innings.

In Game Two, La Roche broke a scoreless tie with a three-run third inning. Senior Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) held La Roche to just six hits but absorbed the defeat. La Roche again held Grove City to five hits in the nightcap -- singles by Fisher, senior second baseman Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian), freshman third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), junior Krysten Fritz (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) and sophomore Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum).

Grove City will lose senior outfielder/catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), Carlson, Rice and Settle to graduation.
