Behrend sweeps Grove City

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the northern portion of the 2008 schedule Thursday afternoon by dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Penn State Behrend. Behrend pulled out an 8-5 win in the opener, then recorded a 12-4, 6-inning victory over Grove City in the second game.

Grove City took a quick 1-0 lead in the opener as freshman pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled home junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) in the top of the first.

However, Behrend took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with a four-run outburst.

Fisher added a solo homer in the seventh to close the game's scoring. Pennell pitched six innings and allowed five earned runs.

In the nightcap, the Wolverines (1-9) again took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as freshman center fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) singled and scored on a Fisher groundout. Behrend took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second but Grove City rebounded with three runs in the top of the third.

Fisher cracked a two-run double that scored Young and senior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), tying the game at 3-3. Pennell followed with a double that drove in Fisher.

Behrend again reclaimed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third, though. The Lions then broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning.

Pennell and sophomore third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) both went 2-for-3. Pennell started in the circle and allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Fisher pitched two innings of relief.

Grove City will face Geneva Saturday at 1 p.m.
