Wolverines split at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Tuesday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson's Brooks Park. Grove City dropped a 4-0 decision in the opener. However, the Wolverines rebounded for a 4-3 win in the nightcap, handing W&J (15-5, 3-1 PAC) its first conference loss of the season.

Grove City trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth of Game Two but junior shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) roped a two-run double that scored sophomore outfielder Jessica Hodge (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and freshman outfielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro). Prior to Fisher's go-ahead double, junior outfielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2.

Freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) made her collegiate debut in the nightcap and picked up her first victory. Guyaux allowed two earned runs in seven innings. She fanned four and did not walk a batter.

Grove City (2-10, 1-1 PAC) fell behind 1-0 in the first but tied the game in the bottom of the third as a Young groundout scored sophomore third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield).

In the opener, freshman pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) allowed just two earned runs in six innings. However, the Wolverines managed just two hits against W&J pitcher Rebecca Nachreiner -- singles by Pennell and freshman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center).

Grove City will visit La Roche Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
