Wolverines split with Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the home portion of the 2008 schedule Saturday afternoon by splitting a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Waynesburg at College Field. Grove City (2-2 PAC) earned a 4-3 victory in eight innings in the opener but Waynesburg rebounded for a 3-2 win in the second game.

Junior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) roped a single to center field in the top of the eighth inning, driving in freshman Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) with the go-ahead run. Pennell opened the inning by reaching on an error.

Freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) fired a two-hitter over eight innings to earn the win. She did not allow an earned run and struck out five. Guyaux (3-0) issued just one walk.

Pennell doubled twice in the win while junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also doubled. Risbon went 2-for-4 while freshman center fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) scored a pair of runs.

In the nightcap, Grove City fell behind 2-0 in the first but quickly tied the game. Fisher doubled in Young, cutting Waynesburg's lead to 2-1. With two outs, freshman shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) singled in Fisher to tie the game. However, Waynesburg's Amanda Baughman homered in the top of the fourth to give Waynesburg (5-11, 1-1 PAC) the lead for good.

Pennell struck out eight and did not walk a batter in six innings for Grove City (4-12 overall). Guyaux pitched a scoreless seventh.

Young singled twice for the Wolverines, who collected seven hits in the nightcap.

Grove City will host Thomas More Wednesday at 2 p.m. in a PAC doubleheader at College Field.
