Thomas More sweeps Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 2-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon with a pair of setbacks against visiting Thomas More at College Field. Thomas More (8-10, 3-3) pulled out a 6-5 win in the opener, then handed Grove City a 4-1 defeat in the nightcap.

Grove City trailed 6-3 in the top of the seventh when junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) belted a two-run double. However, the Wolverines could not pull even.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled home freshman center fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro). Thomas More took a 2-1 lead in the third but Grove City quickly tied the game in the fourth as Fisher singled and eventually scored on a single from senior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson).

Thomas More took the lead for good in the fifth, though, as Kara Dickerson launched a one-out grand slam.

Greiner went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs batted in while Fisher also singled in four at bats. Freshman shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) doubled and singled.

Freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) allowed five earned runs in six innings for Grove City (4-14 overall). Guyaux is 3-1 on the season.

In the nightcap, Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Slater singled and eventually scored on a Greiner double. Thomas More tied the game in the top of the third and took the lead for good in the fourth with an unearned run.

Slater collected two of Grove City's four hits in the second game. Pennell allowed two earned runs in seven innings in the circle for the Wolverines. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Grove City will host Penn State-Greater Allegheny Thursday at 4 p.m.
