Grove City splits with Saint Vincent

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a home doubleheader with Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon at College Field in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference foes. Saint Vincent (17-11) pulled out a 4-2 win in Game One but Grove City rebounded for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth as freshman center fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Young reach on a hit batsman and eventually scored on a run-scoring single from freshman Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley). Saint Vincent took a 2-1 lead in the third but the Wolverines (7-21) reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore DH Cassie Narbe (Orchard Park, N.Y./Christian Central) singled home freshman pinch runner Emma Holdrich (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman).

Freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) earned the win with 4 2/3 innings of relief. She allowed one run and five hits while walking none. Pennell started and yielded one earned run in 2 1/3 innings.

Grove City took a 2-0 lead in the opener as Young and junior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) opened with walks. Young scored on a Fisher groundout while Risbon came home on a single by freshman shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center).

Saint Vincent took the lead with a three-run fourth inning, then added an insurance run in the sixth. Guyaux tossed a complete game for Grove City, allowing two earned runs and five hits in six innings.

Saint Vincent is a provisional member of NCAA Division III and is not yet eligible for the PAC title. The Bearcats are playing full PAC schedules in all conference sports this year, however.

Grove City will host Franciscan University Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. in non-conference action at College Field.
