Wolverines sweep Franciscan

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team picked up a pair of wins Monday afternoon by sweeping visiting Franciscan University in a non-conference doubleheader at College Field. The Wolverines earned an 8-0 win in the opener, then picked up an 11-1 victory in the second game. Both games went just five innings.

In the opener, freshman pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) tossed her second no-hitter of the season in earning the win. Pennell struck out six and walked two in five innings. Eleven days ago, she threw a five-inning no-hitter against Penn State Greater Allegheny.

Grove City broke Monday's opener open with a four-run second inning. The Wolverines collected nine hits in Game One, including a double and single from freshman shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center). Slater also drove in three runs. Senior Krysten Fritz (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) added a pair of singles while junior Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) singled, walked and scored a pair of runs.

Sophomore third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) doubled and scored a pair of runs.

In Game Two, freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) struck out eight in five innings to pick her sixth victory of the season. She allowed just four hits and one unearned run.

Risbon and senior Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each drove in two runs while singling twice. Risbon also scored two runs. Junior Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) added a two-run triple in Grove City's eight-run fourth inning.

Grove City (9-21) will host Thiel Thursday at 4 p.m. in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
