Wolverines sweep Chatham in PAC finale
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team extended its win streak to seven games Saturday as the Wolverines claimed both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against visiting Chatham at College Field. Grove City (13-21, 6-8 PAC) won the opener, 8-3, then nailed down a 17-1 win in Game Two. The nightcap lasted just five innings.
Grove City stormed out to a 6-0 lead through four innings in the opener by scoring three runs in both the second and fourth innings. Freshman pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) cracked a two-run double in the fourth inning to help break the game open. Pennell doubled three times in the opener and drove in three runs.
After Chatham closed to within 6-3 in the top of the sixth, the Wolverines added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Cassie Narbe (Orchard Park, N.Y./Christian Central) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum).
Later in the inning, junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled and then scored on a Pennell double.
Freshman shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) singled twice while Narbe scored a pair of runs. In the circle, Pennell picked up the victory by allowing three runs in seven innings. She fanned seven and walked just once.
All nine Grove City starters recorded at least one hit in Game Two as the Wolverines piled up 21 hits. Slater went 4 for 4 while Pennell went 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Senior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) also collected three hits.
Freshman center fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) tripled in three runs and also added a single while senior left fielder Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) went 2 for 2 with three runs batted in. Senior right fielder Krysten Fritz (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) and senior first baseman Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each singled twice.
Smith and Pennell both rapped two-run singles during Grove City's eight-run third inning. Fisher roped a two-run double in the fourth while Young's bases-clearing triple highlighted a five-run fifth inning for the Wolverines.
Freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) earned her eighth win of the season by allowing just one run and five hits in five innings. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
Grove City's seven-game win streak is the program's longest since the 2004 team won seven straight games in April of that season. The Wolverines will look to extend the win streak Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Penn State Beaver.
