Win streak snapped

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team had its seven-game win streak come to an end Wednesday afternoon as visiting Pitt-Bradford took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at College Field. Pitt-Bradford pulled out a 10-8 win in the opener, then prevailed, 3-0, in Game Two.

Grove City (13-23) fell behind 7-0 in the third inning of Game One but rallied to take the lead with an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the third. Junior Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) ignited the rally with a run-scoring single while junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) followed with a two-run double.

Later in the inning, senior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) closed the gap to 7-5 with a two-run double. Greiner scored the sixth run of the inning on a pinch-hit double from sophomore Cassie Narbe (Orchard Park, N.Y./Christian Central). The Wolverines then took the lead on a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield).

Grove City maintained an 8-7 lead until the seventh when Pitt-Bradford's Jillian Kreitzer doubled home a pair of runs to put the Panthers ahead for good.

Grove City collected 16 hits in the opener. Freshman pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) went 3 for 4 while Fisher, Greiner and Miller all went 2 for 4. Risbon and freshman shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) both singled twice.

Pennell took the defeat after allowing seven earned runs in seven innings. She struck out five and walked two.

In the nightcap, Grove City stranded nine runners, including five in the final two innings. Risbon doubled and singled while Pennell also cracked a double. Pitt-Bradford scored a pair of unearned runs in the third and added a run in sixth.

Freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) fired a complete game and walked just one in seven innings for Grove City. She fanned six and permitted seven hits.

Grove City will conclude the 2008 season Friday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader at Penn State Beaver at 4 p.m.
