Wolverines conclude '08 with sweep

MONACA, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team wrapped up the 2008 season Friday afternoon by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Penn State Beaver. Grove City (15-23) scored eight runs in the top of the seventh in the opener to earn an 8-4 victory. The Wolverines then secured a 2-0 win in Game Two.

Grove City trailed 4-0 entering the seventh inning in Game One. A pinch-hit single from senior Krysten Fritz (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) drove in senior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) and trimmed the lead to 4-2. Two batters later, Fritz scored the game-tying run on a single from junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Freshman Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) then put Grove City ahead with a two-run double that scored Fisher and junior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum). Senior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) followed with consecutive run-scoring singles.

Greiner went 2 for 3 while Risbon also singled twice. Five of Grove City's eight hits came in the seventh inning.

Freshman pitcher Kim Guyaux (Monaca, Pa./Center) earned the victory after allowing three earned runs in seven innings. She struck out six and walked none.

In the nightcap, Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth as Pennell doubled and then scored on a Slater single. The Wolverines added an insurance run in the sixth as Pennell singled, advanced to second on an error and scored on a single from sophomore first baseman Candi Van Tuil (Meadville, Pa./Meadville).

Pennell went 3 for 3 while Van Tuil singled twice in three plate appearances. Pennell earned the win in the circle after tossing her fourth shutout of the year. She allowed just three hits and struck out five in seven innings.

Grove City's 38 games played this year are the most in program history.
