Grove City drops home opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 4-5 overall Tuesday afternoon as the host Wolverines dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with Penn State Beaver. Grove City dropped the opener in nine innings, 2-1. Penn State Beaver then claimed a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Game Two went just five innings due to darkness.

In the opener, Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

However, Grove City could not extend the lead. Penn State Beaver (4-6) tied the game with two outs in the seventh, then scored an unearned run in the ninth. Grove City loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but could not tie the game.

Sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) collected both Grove City hits in the opener as she singled twice. In the circle, sophomore Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) struck out seven and allowed just one earned run in nine innings. She gave up just five hits.

In Game Two, Grove City fell behind 3-0 before scoring a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) opened the inning with a double while junior catcher Jessica Hodge (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) added a single. The Wolverines also took advantage of two errors in the inning.

Lohr added a triple for Grove City in the nightcap. Each team had five hits. Pennell started in the circle and allowed two runs in two innings. Senior Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) allowed one run in three innings of work.

Grove City is now 4-2 in its last six home openers. The Wolverines will visit Malone Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at 4:00.
