Malone takes two from Grove City

CANTON, Ohio -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at NAIA Malone Wednesday afternoon. Malone won the opener 12-4, then picked up an 8-1 decision over the Wolverines (4-7) in Game Two.

Grove City jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the top of the second inning in the opener but Malone posted six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game. The Pioneers then added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule.

Senior Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) each doubled for Grove City while junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) scored twice.

Pennell pitched four innings and yielded eight runs. Fisher pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed four runs, all unearned.

Malone broke Game Two open with another late rally as the Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the game open. Pennell and freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) paced Grove City with two hits each.

Pennell tossed a complete game for Grove City, striking out two in six innings.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Chatham Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
