Grove City earns split with Pitt-Greensburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team is 7-8 overall after splitting a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Pitt-Greensburg at College Field Tuesday afternoon. Grove City dropped a 1-0 decision in the opener but rebounded to claim an 8-7 victory in the second game.

Grove City trailed 7-3 in the nightcap before rallying with five runs over the final two innings. In the sixth inning, senior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) tripled home two runs, then scored on a single from senior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum).

In the seventh, the Wolverines took advantage of two Pitt-Greensburg errors. Fisher roped a game-tying single that scored freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut). Grove City then picked up the win when sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored on a wild pitch.

Fisher also doubled and drove in four runs while going 4 for 4 in Game Two. Risbon, sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) and sophomore left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) all singled twice. Pennell doubled and also scored three runs.

Pennell picked up the victory after pitching five innings. Fisher also tossed two innings during Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City stranded nine runners. Slater doubled and singled while Furmage collected two of Grove City's eight hits. Pennell struck out four and did not walk a batter in seven innings. She scattered eight hits.

Grove City will host Allegheny Thursday in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
