Grove City splits with Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a doubleheader Friday afternoon with visiting Geneva in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at College Field. Grove City dropped the opener 3-2 but stormed back for a 4-3 victory in Game Two.

In the nightcap, Grove City (the designated visiting team) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) worked out of a bases-loaded jam to seal the win.

Pennell and senior first baseman Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) helped ignite Grove City's seventh-inning rally with singles. Pennell scored Grove City's second run on a base hit by senior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum). An error allowed junior catcher Jessica Hodge (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) to score the game-tying run. Hodge had reached on an earlier error.

Grove City then took the lead as sophomore pinch runner Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut).

Furmage put Grove City on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo homer, her second round-tripper of the season. She also singled in the win while junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) doubled.

Pennell picked up the victory after allowing two earned runs in seven innings. She struck out two and walked four.

In Game One, Grove City trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. Lohr tripled and scored on a pinch-hit single from freshman Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). The Wolverines then loaded the bases with one out but could not force extra innings.

Sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) paced Grove City's nine-hit attack with a pair of singles. Each team left 10 runners on base. Pennell allowed three runs in seven innings in the circle.

Friday's games do not count in the PAC standings due to Geneva's provisional status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City will host Allegheny Monday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
