Wolverines win two

PORT VUE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 10-9 overall Tuesday with a pair of non-conference wins at Penn State-Greater Allegheny. Grove City won the opener 9-0 and then earned a 13-4 victory in the nightcap. Game One went six innings while the second game went just five innings due to the mercy rule.

In the opener, sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) fired a six-hit shutout for the Wolverines. Pennell struck out eight and walked just one in earning her ninth win of the season.

Sophomore left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) paced Grove City's 11-hit attack with her first collegiate home run -- a solo blast in the top of the third inning.

Freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut), senior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) all singled twice in the win.

Slater also scored three runs. She and Pennell both drove in a pair.

In the nightcap, Fisher pitched her first complete game of the season in securing the win. She allowed four runs and four hits in five innings.

Offensively, four Grove City players posted multi-hit games. Young tripled and singled while Fisher doubled and singles. Furmage went 2 for 2 and drove in four runs while junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) also singled twice.

Slater doubled in two runs while senior first baseman Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) also doubled for the Wolverines. Grove City jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then broke the game open with seven runs in the third.

The Wolverines will host Washington & Jefferson Thursday at 4 p.m. in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at College Field.
