Grove City sweeps W&J

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 4-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Thursday by sweeping visiting Washington & Jefferson (6-12, 2-2 PAC) in a PAC doubleheader at College Field. Grove City (12-9 overall) earned an 11-3 win in the opener, then pulled out a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City (the designated visiting team) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning as sophomore left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) scored on a single by senior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). Young doubled earlier in the inning.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) fired a two-hit shutout for the Wolverines. She faced just 23 batters, two over the minimum. Pennell fanned three and walked one.

Freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) doubled and singled for Grove City while Fisher finished 2 for 3.

Grove City rallied from a 3-1 deficit in Game One to earn the 5-inning victory. Grove City surged ahead with a three-run fourth inning. Freshman Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) put Grove City ahead to stay with a two-run double that scored Pennell and sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center).

The Wolverines then sealed the win with a six-run fifth inning. Senior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) roped a two-run single while Young invoked the 8-run mercy rule by belting a two-run triple.

Slater went 3 for 3 while Pennell doubled and singled. Junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) tripled and singled while Covatto and Young both finished with three runs batted in. Covatto, Lohr, Pennell and Slater all scored twice.

Pennell (11-8) earned the win in the opener by allowing just five hits in five innings. She struck out three and walked one.

Grove City is now in sole possession of first place in the PAC. The Wolverines are 4-0 in the conference for the first time since 1998. Seven of Grove City's eight home games this season have been decided by one run.

Grove City will visit Waynesburg Saturday in conference action at 1 p.m.
