Wolverines fall to 6-2

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 14-11 overall and 6-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon as the Wolverines dropped both ends of a PAC doubleheader at Thomas More. Thomas More (19-7, 6-2 PAC) won the opener 8-4. The Saints then earned a 9-1 win in Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City collected eight hits but could not rally from an early 6-1 hole. Sophomore left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) homered for Grove City while freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) added a double. Sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) and sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) both singled twice.

Pennell tossed a complete game but took the defeat after allowing three earned runs in six innings. She allowed nine hits while issuing no walks. Grove City committed three errors which helped lead to five unearned runs in the opener.

Young and senior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) both doubled in the nightcap but Thomas More pitcher Dana Bors limited the Wolverines to just four total hits.

Pennell started and allowed three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Fisher pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief and also surrendered three earned runs.

Grove City hosts Westminster (4-2 PAC) Thursday at 4 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.
