Grove City drops two

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 14-13 overall and 6-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Thursday afternoon as visiting Westminster took both ends of a PAC doubleheader from Grove City. Westminster won the opener 2-1, then earned an 8-5 win in Game Two.

Grove City led 1-0 in the opener but Westminster (9-14-1, 6-2 PAC) scored twice in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Amy Cornicelli's two-out, run-scoring double broke a 1-1 tie.

The Wolverines took their 1-0 lead in the third inning as senior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) doubled and later scored on an error.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) took the loss for Grove City in the opener. She allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. Pennell also went 2 for 3 at the plate.

In Game Two, Grove City trailed 4-0 in the fourth inning but cut the lead in half on run-scoring groundouts by Risbon and sophomore Faith Piper (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic). The Wolverines then took the lead in the top of the sixth as senior first baseman Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) roped a two-run double that scored Pennell and freshman DH Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver).

However, Westminster reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning by scoring four runs. Cornicelli's two-run single keyed the comeback.

Pennell stroked three hits for the Wolverines while Covatto scored twice.

Pennell pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Wolverines and allowed six earned runs. Senior Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) recorded the final two outs in relief.

Grove City will return to action Wednesday, April 15 against PAC rival Bethany. The home doubleheader will begin at 3:30 p.m.
