Wolverines drop pair

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Bethany Thursday afternoon at College Field. Bethany (16-12, 6-2 PAC) won the opener 7-1. The Bison then downed Grove City in the nightcap, 12-11, in eight innings.

Grove City led 10-4 entering the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap but Bethany, the designated home team for the second game, forced extra innings with a six-run rally. Grove City took an 11-10 lead in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring double from senior Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) but Bethany scored twice in the bottom of the inning to earn the win.

Sophomore left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) paced Grove City's 11-hit attack with a home run, triple and three runs scored. The home run is her fourth of the season, which extends her single-season school record.

Junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) tripled in the nightcap while sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) went 3 for 4. Senior first baseman Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) singled twice and drove in three runs.

Fisher took the defeat in relief of Pennell. Fisher allowed two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings in the circle. Pennell struck out six in 6 1/3 innings. She allowed eight hits and 10 earned runs.

In the opener, Bethany jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Ashley Marinacci's three-run homer in the top of the first. Grove City broke through in the bottom of the fifth as senior right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) singled in sophomore third baseman Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center).

Risbon and Smith both went 2 for 3 in Game One.

Pennell pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs. Fisher tossed the final two innings and yielded one unearned run.

The Wolverines (14-15, 6-6 PAC) will visit Saint Vincent Saturday at 1 p.m.
