Wolverines drop pair

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. Saint Vincent won the opener 4-2, then earned a 4-1 win in Game Two.

Grove City took a 2-1 lead in the opener as sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and senior first baseman Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) both roped run-scoring singles in the top of the second. Saint Vincent countered with a pair of runs in the third before adding an insurance run in the top of the fifth.

Sophomore left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) paced Grove City's 10-hit attack by going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Senior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) went 2 for 3.

Pennell allowed three earned runs in four-plus innings and took the defeat. Freshman Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

In the nightcap, Grove City (14-17) collected just four hits. Sophomore Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) singled twice for the Wolverines and scored on a Pennell single in the seventh.

Pennell tossed a complete game, allowing three earned runs in seven innings.

Grove City will host Hiram Monday afternoon in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
