Grove City drops finale

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team concluded the 2009 season Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 setback against visiting La Roche (17-16) in non-conference action at College Field. La Roche broke a scoreless tie by scoring a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth.

Freshman DH Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) doubled and singled while freshman shortstop Amanda Furmage (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) also doubled.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) allowed no earned runs and struck out six in seven innings.

The game had been scheduled as part of a doubleheader but inclement weather and impending darkness limited play to just the first game.

Grove City (16-20) recognized seniors Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Kelley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) as part of Senior Day festivities.

Grove City's 16 victories this year are the most for the program since the 1998 squad won 20 games. Pennell (15-18) set a new Grove City record by pitching 201 2/3 innings while sophomore Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) hit a Grove City-record four home runs this year. Junior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) set a new program record with 125 at-bats this year.

Fisher set a Grove City record by playing in 135 career games, all starts.
