Wolverines open with split

MONACA, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the 2010 season Thursday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Penn State Beaver. Grove City dropped the opener 6-3 but rebounded for an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City rallied from an early 3-1 hole by posting five runs in the top of the fourth. Junior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) put Grove City head with a two-run triple while senior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) followed with a two-run homer.

Young also singled and finished with three runs batted in while sophomore right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) doubled and singled. Junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) and freshman pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) both doubled while freshman catcher Olivia Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) went 2 for 4 and knocked in a pair of runs.

Clarke earned the pitching win for Grove City, allowing two earned runs in three innings. Freshmen Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) both pitched one inning of relief. Junior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) allowed just one hit over the final two innings to earn the save.

Murtoff doubled and singled in the opener but Grove City could not overcome a 6-0 deficit. Senior catcher Jessica Hodge (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) roped a two-run single in the top of the sixth while freshman left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) added a run-scoring single.

Pennell allowed five earned runs in four innings and took the setback for Grove City. Sheppeck and Clarke both pitched one inning of relief.

Grove City will visit Allegheny Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
