Grove City falls on road

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 1-3 overall Friday afternoon with a pair of setbacks at Allegheny in a non-conference doubleheader at the Robertson Complex. Allegheny (2-0) won the opener 6-4, then earned a 7-1 victory in Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the third with a three-run rally. Senior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run triple which scored junior left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) and freshman first baseman Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell). Lohr then scored Grove City's third run of the inning on a single by sophomore right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs).

Allegheny reclaimed the lead for good in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Maggie Bodenlos. Grove City pulled to within 6-4 in the seventh on a run-scoring single by sophomore third baseman Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) but the Wolverines could draw no closer.

Murtoff, junior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) all had two hits while junior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) doubled.

Pennell pitched 4 2/3 innings and yielded five earned runs. Freshman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) and Clarke both pitched in relief.

Allegheny jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning of Game Two as Grove City managed just four hits. Pennell doubled while freshman left fielder Brittany Barrett (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) singled and scored in the fifth.

Clarke allowed three earned runs in five innings in the circle. Pennell pitched a scoreless sixth in relief.

Grove City will visit La Roche Monday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
