Grove City falls to Hiram

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the home portion of the 2010 season Wednesday afternoon by dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Hiram (7-9) at College Field. Hiram picked up a 3-0 win in the opener, then topped the Wolverines 5-1 in Game Two.

In the opener, freshman pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) allowed just one earned run in six innings for Grove City. She allowed just five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three. However, Grove City managed just two hits in the setback.

Hiram's Kelly Langland poked a two-run single in the third inning to give Hiram its 3-0 lead.

Junior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) pitched a scoreless inning of relief as she struck out two of three batters faced.

Pennell allowed just one earned in 6 2/3 innings in Game Two but took the defeat. Hiram scored four unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Grove City (1-5) broke through in the bottom of the fifth as junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) walked and scored on a single by junior outfielder Faith Piper (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic).

Grove City left eight runners on base in the nightcap, including seven in scoring position.

The Wolverines will leave for Kissimmee, Fla. Friday to begin a nine-game stand at the National Training Center over Easter Break. Grove City will face Luther (Iowa) at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening.
