Thomas More takes two

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against visiting Thomas More Saturday afternoon at College Field. Thomas More (12-10, 6-0 PAC) won the opener in five innings, 9-1, then rallied for a 7-3 win in the second game.

Grove City collected 14 hits in the nightcap but the Wolverines stranded 12 runners on base, including six in scoring position.

The Wolverines trailed 1-0 in the second inning but tied the game on a run-scoring single from senior catcher Jessica Hodge (Grove City, Pa./Grove City). Grove City (the visiting team in Game Two) then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth as junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) doubled and scored on a single from freshman third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch).

However, Thomas More posted six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control of the game. Dana Bors' two-run double highlighted the inning.

Grove City cut the lead to 7-3 in the sixth on an RBI single from freshman pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Lower Burrell). The Wolverines left the bases loaded in the inning, however.

Sheppeck went 3 for 4 for Grove City while freshman outfielder Brittany Barrett (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local), sophomore DH Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), Hodge and senior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) all had two hits each.

Clarke allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. She allowed just three hits but issued six walks. Sheppeck recorded the final two outs of the fifth inning and junior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) pitched a scoreless sixth.

In the opener, three Grove City errors led to eight unearned runs in the top of the fifth for Thomas More. Pennell allowed one earned run and seven hits in four innings while Clarke pitched the fifth inning.

Covatto doubled for the Wolverines. Sheppeck and Slater both singled twice in the opener.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Monday in a PAC doubleheader. The twinbill starts at 3:30 p.m.
