Wolverines sweep W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 2-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday afternoon by sweeping host Washington & Jefferson in a PAC doubleheader at Brooks Park. Grove City pulled out a 3-1 victory in eight innings in the opener and then picked up a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, sophomore DH Leeza Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth by stroking a two-run single to left-center. Covatto's hit scored freshmen Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) and Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch).

Junior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley), Sheppeck and Clarke combined on a one-hitter in the opener. Clarke got the win after pitching three perfect innings in relief. Pennell started and allowed one hit and no earned runs in four innings. Sheppeck pitched a perfect fifth inning.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) doubled and then scored on an error. The Wolverines collected seven hits in the opener.

Pennell and Covatto both knocked in runs in the first inning of Game Two, helping Grove City jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Wolverines (the designated home team in the game) then broke the game open with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Covatto drove in a run on a fielder's choice while freshman Carolyn Vaeth (Islip, N.Y./Islip) followed by driving in a pair of runs with a single.

Clarke went 3 for 4 while Sheppeck and Young both had two hits apiece. All three players scored twice.

Grove City's three pitchers yielded only three hits in the nightcap. Clarke notched her second win of the day by allowing two runs and three hits in four innings. Sheppeck pitched a perfect fifth and Pennell retired the final six batters of the game.

Grove City (7-14 overall) has now won five straight against W&J (9-13, 3-3 PAC), dating back to the 2008 season. The Wolverines continue conference play Wednesday with a doubleheader at Westminster. The PAC twinbill begins at 4 p.m.
