Grove City earns split

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team moved to 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon by splitting a conference doubleheader at Westminster. Westminster (13-11, 2-2 PAC) won the opener 4-0 but Grove City rebounded for a 2-0 win in the nightcap.

In Game Two, freshman third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) belted a two-run homer in the third inning that put the Wolverines ahead to stay.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) earned the win in the second game by allowing just two hits in four innings. Sheppeck pitched a scoreless fifth inning and junior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned her second save of the season by pitching the sixth and seventh innings.

Senior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) opened the bottom of the third with a triple and Sheppeck broke the scoreless tie with her two-out homer. It is Sheppeck's first home run of the season.

Grove City (the designated home team in the second game) had just three hits in the nightcap as Pennell also singled.

In the opener, Westminster's Lis Schulz cracked a three-run homer off Pennell in the bottom of the first. Grove City collected seven hits in the opener but stranded five runners in scoring position. Lohr doubled twice as part of a 3-for-3 outing.

Pennell pitched four innings and allowed three runs. Sheppeck pitched a scoreless fifth and Clarke permitted an unearned run in the sixth.

Grove City (8-15 overall) will visit Bethany Saturday in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
