Bethany takes two

BETHANY, W. Va. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bethany. Bethany earned a 9-1 win in the opener, then secured an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Grove City (8-17, 3-5 PAC) forged a 1-1 tie in the top of the second as junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) doubled and then came home on a single from junior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley).

Bethany broke the game open with three runs in the third and four more runs in the fifth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule. Grove City had just three hits in the opener.

Pennell took the defeat as she allowed four earned runs in four innings. Freshman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up four total runs.

In Game Two, Bethany jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning en route to the win. For Grove City, sophomore DH Leeza Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) doubled and junior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut Academy) singled twice.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) started for Grove City and allowed four runs (all unearned) in 1 2/3 innings. Pennell pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs.

Bethany improved to 18-10 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Grove City will face Geneva Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.
