Wolverines fall at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Geneva Tuesday afternoon. Geneva picked up a 5-2 win in the opener and then took the nightcap 7-4.

Grove City (8-19) fell behind 3-0 in the opener but broke through in the top of the fourth as freshman third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) singled and eventually scored on an error.

In the fifth, sophomore right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) led off with her first home run of the season, pulling the Wolverines to within 4-2. However, Geneva held Grove City hitless over the final three innings.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) took the defeat for Grove City after allowing three earned runs and four hits in five innings. Junior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) allowed one run in the sixth inning.

Clarke went 3 for 4 at the plate in the nightcap to help pace Grove City's 12-hit attack. Junior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) doubled and singled while Sheppeck and senior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) both doubled. Junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) singled twice.

Murtoff gave Grove City (the designated home team) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a run-scoring groundout. Geneva took a 3-1 lead in the third but Clarke's run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth cut the lead to 3-2.

However, Geneva (16-13) broke the game open with four runs on just one hit in the top of the seventh.

Pennell allowed three runs in four innings and took the setback. Sheppeck pitched two scoreless innings and Clarke pitched the seventh.

Tuesday's games do not count in the conference standings due to Geneva's provisional membership status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City hosts Chatham Thursday in a PAC doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
