Grove City drops two
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped to 5-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon as visiting Waynesburg took both ends of a PAC doubleheader at College Field. Waynesburg (13-17, 6-8 PAC) won the opener 4-0 and then pulled out a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Grove City (the designated visiting team) trailed 4-2 entering the top of the seventh of Game Two. However, the Wolverines rallied for a pair of runs. Senior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) opened the inning with a triple. Lohr then scored on a double by freshman third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch).
Sheppeck scored the tying run when freshman pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) singled to right.
Waynesburg secured the win in the bottom of the seventh when Amanda Baughman doubled in Kristen Lautenschlager with one out.
Grove City (12-21) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by senior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman right fielder Brittany Barrett (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local). Waynesburg tied the game in the fourth but the Wolverines inched back ahead in the fifth as Lohr scored on Sheppeck's first double of the day.
Sheppeck went 4 for 4 while Lohr went 2 for 3. The Wolverines out-hit Waynesburg 11-5. Grove City left seven runners on base, including six in scoring position.
Clarke started and allowed one hit through four innings. Sheppeck allowed an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings while Pennell yielded two unearned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Clarke returned to pitch the seventh and absorbed the defeat. Grove City committed five errors which led to the four unearned runs.
