Wolverines cap season with sweep
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College softball team wrapped up the 2010 season Tuesday evening by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader with host La Roche. Grove City (14-23) won the opener 10-1 in five innings. The Wolverines then earned a 10-2 victory in Game Two.
Grove City broke the first game open by erupting for six runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman pinch hitter Emily Reece (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) ignited the inning with a run-scoring double that drove in junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center). Junior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman catcher Carolyn Vaeth (Islip, N.Y./Islip) both singled in runs during the rally.
Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when junior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) singled in Pennell and Vaeth. The lead grew to 3-0 in the third as Slater doubled in freshman Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell).
Senior center fielder Heidi Lohr (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) paced Grove City's 12-hit attack by going 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Clarke and Pennell both went 2 for 3 while freshman third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) drove in two runs.
Pennell picked up the pitching win, allowing no runs and three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) recorded the final two outs.
In Game Two, Grove City jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring twice in each of the first three innings. Lohr tripled in Slater in the first inning while Young lashed a two-run single in the second inning.
Lohr went 3 for 4 with two triples while Slater doubled and singled. Pennell went 2 for 3 and knocked in three runs. Clarke and Slater both scored twice.
Clarke pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs. She allowed just five hits. Sheppeck pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Grove City will lose Lohr and senior catcher Jessica Hodge (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) to graduation. The youth-laden Wolverines project to return 12 players next season who started at least 10 games in 2010.
