Wolverines compete in Florida
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Grove City College softball team made its final preparations for the start of Presidents' Athletic Conference play by playing nine games over Easter Break at the National Training Center in Kissimmee, Fla. March 26-31.
The Wolverines went 2-7 during the trip, which featured games against Carleton, Elmhurst, Loras, Luther, Manchester and Oberlin.
Grove City earned a 3-0 win over Carleton March 26 as junior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley), freshman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) and freshman Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) combined on a four-hit shutout. Pennell pitched four innings to earn the win. Sheppeck tossed a scoreless fifth and Clarke recorded her first collegiate save after working the final two innings.
Sheppeck also doubled in two runs in the win while sophomore outfielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) also doubled for Grove City.
Three days later, Grove City earned an 11-7 win over Manchester as junior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) doubled twice, scored three runs and knocked in five runs. Junior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) singled twice and scored three times.
Pennell picked up the win after throwing five innings. Clarke pitched the final two innings.
Grove City opened the trip with a 14-0 setback against Luther March 26. The next day, the Wolverines fell to Elmhurst 1-0 and Loras 5-0. Loras also handed Grove City a 9-0 defeat March 29.
Oberlin pulled out a 6-5 win over the Wolverines March 30 while Elmhurst completed a sweep by securing an 8-0 win. Grove City concluded the trip with a 3-0 defeat against Manchester March 31.
Junior left fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) hit .462 (6 for 13) in eight games during the trip while Pennell and Sarah Young both hit .30 by going 6 for 20.
Clarke pitched in eight games and struck out 25 batters in 28 1/3 innings. Pennell made six appearances while Sheppeck pitched in four games, including one start.
Grove City will host Saint Vincent Tuesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
