Grove City opens with wins

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the 2011 season Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from Concordia-Moorhead at the National Training Center. Grove City won the opener 8-0 in five innings, then picked up a 5-0 sweep in the nightcap.

In Game One, sophomore Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) helped pace the Wolverines by doubling twice. Freshman Lauren Clifford (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled and singled and sophomore Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) singled twice.

Senior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned the shutout win, allowing just two hits in five innings. She struck out three.

Sheppeck cracked three hits in Game Two, helping spearhead Grove City's 13-hit outburst. Senior Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro), junior Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) and sophomore Olivia Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) all had two hits each.

Clarke pitched five shutout innings and fanned four. Freshman Janna Strodtman (Wheaton, Ill./Timothy Christian) pitched the final two innings to seal the win.

Grove City (2-0) will face Concordia-Moorhead in another doubleheader Thursday. Game One starts at 9:30 a.m.
