Grove City splits wild doubleheader
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the northern portion of the 2011 schedule Tuesday afternoon by splitting a home doubleheader with Pitt-Greensburg. Grove City (5-5) won the opener 9-7 but Pitt-Greensburg rallied for a 13-10 win in Game Two.
Grove City scored in each of its final five at-bats in Game One in rallying from an early 4-1 deficit. The Wolverines broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the sixth when junior left fielder Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) doubled in senior DP Faith Piper (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic). Covatto then scored the Wolverines' ninth run on a single by sophomore third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch).
Grove City finished the game with 13 hits, including seven for extra bases. Senior first baseman Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) led off the second inning with a home run. She also singled and drove in three runs. Sheppeck doubled as part of a three-hit game and Piper went 3 for 4. Covatto went 2 for 3 and sophomore pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) doubled and singled.
Junior right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) roped a game-tying double in the bottom of the fifth. Covatto, Pennell and Piper all scored twice.
Clarke pitched 6 1/3 total innings over two stints in the pitcher's circle and earned the win. She struck out five and allowed four earned runs. Sophomore Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) pitched 2/3 of an inning.
Pitt-Greensburg took control of the nightcap by scoring six runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Grove City did rally for four runs in the bottom of the seventh but the Wolverines could get no closer. Sophomore Emily Reese (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) roped a two-run double to highlight the Grove City seventh inning.
Senior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) homered for Grove City and Sheppeck went 2 for 4 with a double. Piper also doubled and scored three times.
Pennell started and allowed nine runs in 3 1/3 innings to take the defeat. Clarke, Jentsch and freshman Janna Strodtman (Wheaton, Ill./Timothy Christian) all pitched in relief.
Grove City will visit Hiram Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
