Wolverines drop two

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Sunday afternoon by dropping both ends of a conference doubleheader at Thomas More (19-9, 8-0 PAC). Thomas More scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 3-2 win in Game One. The Saints then secured an 8-4 win in Game Two over Grove City.

In Game One, Grove City took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh and led 2-1 with two outs when Thomas More catcher Stefaney Turner stroked a bases-loaded single that drove in the tying and winning runs.

Junior right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) and senior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) both singled twice for the Wolverines. Senior left fielder Faith Piper (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) and junior Allison Eastham (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) both doubled.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) fired a complete game for Grove City, allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings. She struck out two and permitted eight hits.

Thomas More, the designated visiting team in Game Two, broke open the game with a five-run seventh inning. Freshman designated player Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) highlighted Grove City's offensive attack with her second home run of the season. Young and senior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) both doubled for Grove City.

Pennell pitched a complete game, allowing five earned runs in seven innings. She fanned four and walked just one.

Grove City will host conference rival Westminster Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
