Wolverines drop two

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 12-10 overall Thursday afternoon as the Wolverines dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Westminster at College Field. Westminster won the opener 8-4 and then rallied for a 4-3 win in Game Two.

Grove City (3-5 PAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap. Senior center fielder Brittany Young (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) led off with a single, moved up on a passed ball and scored on a base hit by junior right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs).

Sophomore third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) tripled in Murtoff and senior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) drove in Sheppeck with a ground out.

Westminster (12-10, 5-1 PAC) pulled into a 3-3 tie in the fourth and then took the lead in the fifth on a solo homer by DiAndra DiBacco.

Slater doubled twice in Game Two for Grove City. Both teams had six hits. Senior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) took the setback after allowing three earned runs in five innings. Sophomore Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) pitched a scoreless sixth.

Westminster took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of Game One but the Wolverines quickly tied the game with a three-run outburst. Pennell and freshman DP Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) ignited the inning with back-to-back doubles. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) added a run-scoring single while an error led to Grove City's third run.

Westminster broke the tie with four runs in the fifth inning, however.

Clarke allowed five earned runs in six innings and took the setback for Grove City. Jentsch pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two.

Slater and freshman Lauren Clifford (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) both doubled for Grove City. Pennell went 2 for 3.

Grove City will host Bethany Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.
