Grove City splits with Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Geneva Wednesday afternoon at College Field in a clash of Presidents' Athletic Conference members. Geneva won Game One 6-0 but Grove City rebounded for a 6-2 victory in Game Two.

In Game Two, sophomore third baseman Amanda Sheppeck (Butler, Pa./Knoch) homered and doubled to help pace the Wolverines (13-13) while senior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) and sophomore first baseman Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) both doubled and singled.

Grove City, the designated visiting team, led 3-0 after five innings and sealed the win with a three-run sixth inning. Sheppeck led off with a double and then came home on a run-scoring single from junior right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs). Clarke pushed the lead to 5-0 by doubling in sophomore pinch runner Elsa Klingensmith (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell).

Clarke later scored the third run of the inning on a groundout by freshman pinch hitter Lauren Clifford (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley).

The Wolverines quickly took a 1-0 lead in the first when Young doubled and scored on an error. Sheppeck then led off the second inning with a solo homer to put Grove City ahead 2-0.

Grove City extended the lead in the third when freshman DP Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) doubled in senior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center).

Senior pitcher Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned the win by firing five shutout innings. She struck out three and yielded just five hits. Sophomore Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief and Schmidt recorded the final out in the seventh.

Pennell tripled and singled in Game One while Murtoff went 2 for 3. Geneva broke open the game with a four-run outburst in the sixth inning.

Clarke pitched 3 2/3 total innings and allowed three runs (two earned). Jentsch allowed three unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings and Schmidt worked a scoreless seventh.

The games do not count in the conference standings due to Geneva's provisional status in NCAA Division III. Grove City will visit Chatham Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
