Grove City splits with Behrend

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team is now 16-14 overall after splitting a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Penn State Behrend Thursday afternoon at College Field. Grove City captured a 1-0 win in the opener but Behrend (14-14) bounced back for an 8-1 victory in Game Two.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) fired a two-hit shutout in Game One for the Wolverines. Clarke (10-6) struck out six and did not walk a batter in earning the win.

Grove City scored the lone run when junior right fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) singled in senior shortstop Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center).

Senior Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) tripled for Grove City and freshman DP Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) doubled. Grove City had just four hits in the opener.

Penn State Behrend jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then sealed the win with three seventh-inning runs.

The Wolverines cut Behrend's lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning when sophomore Emily Reece (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) singled in Schmidt.

Pennell started in the pitcher's circle and took the setback after allowing five runs in four innings. Schmidt, Clarke and sophomore Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) all pitched in relief.

Grove City will visit Thiel Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
