Grove City earns first sweep of 2012
GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from host Pitt-Greensburg Tuesday afternoon. Grove City pulled out a 10-9 win in the opener and then rolled to a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.
In Game One, the Wolverines jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and held off a late Pitt-Greensburg rally for the win.
Freshman shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) paced Grove City's 17-hit attack by homering, tripling and adding two singles in a 4-for-5 effort. Freshman catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs batted in and freshman DP Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) added two hits and drove in three runs.
Also for Grove City, senior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) and senior center fielder Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) both singled twice. Freshman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) doubled and scored a pair of runs.
Shirey homered in the top of the first and Gmuer added a two-run single, giving Grove City a 5-0 lead. Morris and Gmuer added run-scoring singles in the second inning, extending the lead to 7-0.
Junior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) earned the win after striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings. She allowed six earned runs. Junior Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) recorded the final five outs in relief.
Jentsch earned the win in Game Two by yielding just one run and four hits in five innings.
Morris doubled twice and drove in two runs to help lead the Grove City offense. Young doubled and singled while Shirey and Covatto both had two hits each. Covatto, Morris, Shirey and Young all scored two runs.
Grove City (4-8) will open its home schedule Thursday at 3:30 against Houghton in non-conference action.
