Grove City earns 3rd straight sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 8-8 overall Friday afternoon by taking both ends of a doubleheader from visting Mount Aloysius at College Field. Grove City captured an 8-0 win in Game One, then earned an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

Junior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) fired a six-inning no-hitter in Game One to earn her fourth victory of the season. Clarke struck out five batters and walked only two.

Grove City broke open Game One by scoring seven runs in its final two at bats. Freshman third baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) highlighted Grove City's three-run fifth inning by lacing a two-run single.

The Wolverines sealed the win with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior center fielder Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) roped a two-run double that gave Grove City a 7-0 lead. Rayburn then singled in senior left fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) to invoke the eight-run mercy rule.

Grove City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) singled and eventually scored on an error.

Rayburn finished the opener 2 for 4 with three runs batted in. Freshman shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) doubled while Clarke and freshman DP Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) both scored twice.

In Game Two, Grove City grabbed a quick 1-0 lead when Rayburn tripled and came home on Young's single. Young later stole home on the front end of a double steal while freshman catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) scored the third run of the inning on Gmuer's fielder's choice.

Two Mountie errors helped Grove City extend its lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning. Gmuer doubled and scored on a run-scoring groundout by junior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) in the fifth, pushing the lead to 6-1. The Wolverines then added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Murtoff and Young each had a double and single while Rayburn added a single to her triple. Morris went 2 for 3.

Jentsch fired a complete game to earn the pitching victory. She allowed two earned runs and five hits in seven innings. Jentsch struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Winners of six straight games, Grove City returns to action Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at La Roche. The doubleheader begins at 3:30 p.m.
