Grove City drops two
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday by dropping both ends of a home doubleheader with Thiel at College Field. Thiel defeated Grove City 10-7 in the opener and then took the second game, 3-0.
In Game One, Grove City trailed 9-3 entering the sixth before charging back with four two-out runs. Junior first baseman Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) ignited the rally with a double. She then scored on a single from senior center fielder Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver).
Covatto came home on a single by senior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) and a wild pitch scored freshman third baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley). Young scored the fourth run of the inning when freshman shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) roped a run-scoring single.
Thiel, the home team for Game One, added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Grove City brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but could get no closer.
Thiel led 2-0 in the third but Shirey tied the game with a two-run single that scored Rayburn and Young. Shirey and Jentsch both finished the game 3 for 4. Young and senior left fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) both had two hits.
Junior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) started and took the setback for Grove City. She pitched five innings, striking out four. Freshman Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) pitched a scoreless sixth.
In Game Two, Thiel (7-11, 2-0 PAC) scored all three of its runs in the top of the third. Rayburn, Shirey and freshman catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) all singled, accounting for Grove City's three hits.
As in Game One, the Wolverines brought the tying run to the plate in their last at-bat but could not force extra innings.
Jentsch threw a complete game, allowing three runs in seven innings. She struck out three and walked only one.
Grove City (11-11, 0-2) will host Chatham Tuesday in a conference doubleheader at 3:30.
