Wolverines drop two

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped a pair of hard-fought decisions Thursday afternoon to host Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Merriman Complex. Geneva won the opener 3-1 and then pulled out a 1-0 victory in the second game.

In Game One, Geneva (16-12, 4-2 PAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Grove City slashed the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third when senior center fielder Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) cracked a solo home run.

However, Grove City did not advance a runner past first base over the final four innings. Freshman catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 2 for 3. Grove City had just three hits in the opener.

Junior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) struck out four batters in six innings. She took the setback, however.

In Game Two, Geneva broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth by scoring an unearned run.

Freshman shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) paced the Grove City offense by going 3 for 3 with a double. Freshman Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) also doubled.

Junior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) fired a five-hitter for the Wolverines. She struck out three and yielded no earned runs in seven innings.

Grove City (13-13, 2-4 PAC) will visit Washington & Jefferson Tuesday for a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
