Wolverines split with Waynesburg
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Waynesburg Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at College Field. Grove City earned a 3-0 win in the opener but Waynesburg pulled out a 4-3 victory in the second game.
In the opener, junior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) fired a two-hit shutout in earning the win. It is Jentsch's first career shutout. She struck out three and walked just one in seven innings.
Grove City (15-17, 3-7 PAC) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth by scoring all three of its runs. Freshman shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) belted a double that scored junior first baseman Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), giving Grove City a 1-0 lead.
The lead grew to 2-0 when freshman catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) tripled in Shirey. Morris scored the third run of the inning on a single by senior left fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs).
Morris went 2 for 3 in the victory. Grove City had just four hits.
In Game Two, Waynesburg (the designated home team) broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh on Samantha Volponi's game-winning single.
Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener. Clarke singled in freshman third baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) to open the scoring and Shirey followed with a triple that sent home Clarke. In the fifth, Grove City reclaimed the lead, 3-2, when Rayburn and Clarke stroked back-to-back doubles.
Clarke went 3 for 4 and Murtoff added a double.
Clarke pitched six innings and struck out seven. She ceded one earned run but took the setback. Freshman Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) also pitched in relief.
Grove City will host Thomas More Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.
