Grove City splits with Saints
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Thomas More Wednesday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at College Field.
After dropping a 3-2 decision in the opener, Grove City rebounded for a 4-0 victory in Game Two.
Junior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) fired a three-hit shutout in Game Two to help lead the Wolverines. Clarke struck out 10 batters and did not issue a walk. It is Clarke's second shutout of the season and third of her career.
The designated visiting team for Game Two, Grove City (16-18, 4-8 PAC) scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) led off with a single and then moved to third on a double by senior left fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs).
Morris scored the first run of the game on a single by senior second baseman Sarah Young (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut). Murtoff scored on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 2-0. Young later scored on an error and a second error sent freshman DP Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) home.
Young finished the second game 2 for 3. The teams had just seven combined hits.
Grove City fell behind 3-0 in the first game but scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman third baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) tripled with two outs and then scored on a Young double.
In the sixth, Morris singled and later scored on a groundout by junior right fielder Elsa Klingensmith (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell). Morris went 2 for 3 with a double.
