Grove City drops two
BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethany Tuesday afternoon. Bethany took the opener 7-0 and then earned a 7-1 victory in the second game.
Bethany jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings in the opener and added a seventh run in the fifth inning. For Grove City, senior left fielder Grace Murtoff (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) and senior center fielder Elizabeth Covatto (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) both singled. Bethany limited Grove City to just two hits.
Junior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) started and pitched five innings. She struck out three. Junior Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) pitched a scoreless sixth.
In Game Two, Bethany scored four first-inning runs to take control of the game. Grove City broke through in the sixth when freshman third baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).
Rayburn went 2 for 3 while junior right fielder Elsa Klingensmith (Lower Burrell, Pa./Homeschooled) doubled and singled.
Clarke threw a complete game but took the setback for Grove City. She struck out four in seven innings.
Grove City (18-20, 6-10) will conclude the 2012 regular season Saturday against conference foe Saint Vincent. The home doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
