Grove City sweeps Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Grove City College softball team opened the northern portion of its 2013 schedule Wednesday evening by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Franciscan. Grove City earned a 9-1 win in the opener and picked up an 11-5 victory in the second game.

Grove City (3-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Game One as sophomore DP Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled in sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) and freshman catcher Claire Haumesser (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) followed with a two-run homer.

After scoring two unearned runs in the second, Grove City pushed its lead to 7-0 in the third inning on a run-scoring single by sophomore right fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West). Senior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) added a run-scoring single in the fourth while an unearned run in the top of the fifth closed Grove City's scoring.

Clarke earned the win by allowing no earned runs in five innings. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Shirey tripled, doubled and singled to lead Grove City's 14-hit attack. Sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and freshman left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) doubled and singled. Haumesser finished 2 for 4.

In Game Two, Grove City trailed 4-3 entering the fifth before scoring eight runs over the final three innings. Morris tied the game with a solo homer in the fifth and Vidovic scored the go-ahead run on a groundout by senior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).

Freshman third baseman Casey Woodcock (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) highlighted the Wolverines four-run seventh inning with a two-run double.

Sophomore center fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 3 with three runs scored for Grove City. Clarke singled twice and scored two runs.

Jentsch threw a complete game for the Wolverines, allowing three earned runs and seven hits in seven innings.

Grove City opens Presidents' Athletic Conference play Thursday at Chatham at 3:30 p.m.
