Grove City drops home opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened its home schedule Saturday afternoon by dropping both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Geneva (12-8, 6-0). Geneva won the opener 7-2 and then rallied past Grove City 9-5 in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City trailed 3-1 before charging ahead with three runs in the third and an additional run in the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) and senior first baseman Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) both collected run-scoring singles in the third while Shirey's fourth-inning sacrifice fly drove in freshman left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) with Grove City's fifth run.

However, Geneva (the designated home team in Game Two) reclaimed the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Shirey went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs batted in. Sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) also went 2 for 3 with a double. Rayburn also scored twice.

Senior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) pitched a complete game but took the defeat. She allowed one earned run and eight hits in six innings.

Shirey tripled and singled in the opener while sophomore catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled and singled. Clarke allowed six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings and took the defeat. Freshman Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) pitched 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

Grove City will visit conference foe Thiel Monday at 3:30 p.m. in Greenville.
