Grove City drops twinbill at Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Waynesburg Saturday afternoon, 3-2 and 6-4. Waynesburg scored the go-ahead run of each game in its final at bat.
Grove City (4-14, 1-7 PAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opener when sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) walked and later scored on a single from sophomore catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).
Waynesburg (11-12, 3-6 PAC) pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom half of the first but Grove City forged a 2-2 tie in the fourth as Morris doubled and scored on a pinch-hit single from freshman Casey Woodcock (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida).
However, Waynesburg scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.
Morris finished 3 for 3 and Woodcock singled twice. Senior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings for Grove City but took the defeat. She did not walk a batter and allowed just two earned runs.
In Game Two, Waynesburg (the designated visiting team) scored twice in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 deadlock.
Grove City pulled into a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third when Woodcock laced a two-run double that scored both Morris and sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).
In the bottom of the fifth, Grove City again pulled into a tie, 4-4, when sophomore outfielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) walked with the bases loaded and freshman third baseman Claire Haumesser (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) hit a sacrifice fly.
Shirey and Woodock each had two hits for Grove City. Senior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) pitched 4 2/3 total innings and took the setback. She allowed five earned runs. Clarke pitched 2 1/3 innings between Jentsch's stints and surrendered one run.
Grove City will visit conference foe Washington & Jefferson Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
