Grove City drops twinbill

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Thomas More. Thomas More (17-15, 8-4 PAC) won the opener 7-4 and then pulled out a 1-0 victory in Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore center fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) led off with a walk and later scored on a one-out double from sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).

Thomas More tied the game in the bottom of the first but the Wolverines scored twice without a hit in the second inning. Junior third baseman Baylie Jones (Conneautville, Pa./Conneaut Valley) scored on an error and sophomore right fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) came home on a fielder's choice.

Thomas More broke open the game with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Grove City pulled to within 7-4 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley). The Wolverines had just two hits in the opener.

Senior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) started and allowed three earned runs in three innings. Freshman Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) allowed two runs in 1/3 of an inning. Senior Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) fired 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Jentsch threw a complete game in the nightcap, allowing one run in seven innings. She struck out four and walked one. Thomas More limited Grove City (the home team for Game Two) to three hits. Senior DP Emily Reece (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) led off the sixth inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice. However, the Wolverines could not tie the game.
