Grove City splits doubleheader

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference home doubleheader Saturday afternoon with league-leading Westminster (19-11, 11-3) at College Field. Grove City dropped the opener 11-1 but stormed back for a 10-2, five-inning victory in Game Two.

Grove City charged out to a 4-0 lead in Game One as sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) and senior first baseman Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) opened the game with consecutive singles. Rayburn scored on a fielder's choice and Clarke later scored on a single from sophomore catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Junior DP Baylie Jones (Conneautville, Pa./Conneaut Valley) followed with a two-run single that drove in Morris and sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).

Westminster pulled to within 4-2 but Grove City broke open the game with a six-run fourth inning. Jones drove in Shirey with a double while sophomore center fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) cracked a two-run double that pushed the lead to 9-2. Freshman left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) drove in the sixth run with a single that scored Jones.

Clarke, Jones and Morris all had two hits each. Clarke, Morris, Rayburn and Shirey each scored twice.

Senior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) earned the win by allowing no earned runs in five innings. She yielded just two hits.

Grove City (6-18, 3-11 PAC) had just two hits in the opener as Clarke and Lynskey both singled. Clarke started in the circle and allowed four earned runs in five innings. She took the defeat. Freshman Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) pitched in relief.

Grove City will host conference foe Bethany Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
